Saving on Textbooks
The Page Turner Bookstore
The textbook crunch for higher education can take a bite out of ones savings in a hurry. The Page Turner
staff have been keenly aware of the problems of rising textbooks and some of the 'alternatives' out there. As
students and as book management.
1) Get to know your instructor. They can tell you how they teach, what they cover, and what sort of
resources they personally require.
2) Avoid Unneeded Materials: Ask the instructor if they even require the book for the class. In some
instances you might not need to even purchase a book for class. Also with some instructors, they may
require only the main book and not the extra materials some packages are loaded with. Find out exactly what
you need for class and save money by avoiding the 'unneeded' materials.
3) Old Editions: Edition changes have been coming so swiftly that often the old edition and the new have
very minimal differences. Ask your instructor if the old edition is alright, as this can save you at least 50%
of the new edition cost! The usual cost range our bookstore sees for old editions is 9.99 to 29.99, and we
buy back at end of the semester if it is still usuable by a local professor the next semester!
4) E Books: The Page Turner is researching into affiliating with ebook sites, where is downloaded right onto
your computer! Cutting out the printing, binding, and shipping costs that publishers normally add into the
retail price. But remember that the ebook can not be resold, so it has no value at buyback or to another
student.
5) Textbook Renting: The Page Turner is also looking into Online Rental sites to affilate with. But will not
take part in an actual rental program inside store. It has been found out that on-site rental programs require
extra fees or tuition from the customer. The Page Turner has no interest in hidden fees or charging for a
service that is ment to lessen the burden of cost.
6) Reserve Early! Regardless of which bookstore you decide to use, reserving early is always a great
stategy once you know which classes you have! It gives the bookstore time to get your book in before class
AND puts you on the short list for any used books that might come in. You also do your fellow classmates
a great favor by alerting the bookstore of which titles to have extras of before fee payment day. Try to book
your reserves at least two weeks in advance, to give your store time to find you the least expensive copy
possible and get it in before classes start!
